In 2018, we bought 10 hectares, roughly 25 acres of pure Mayan jungle located at less than 20 minutes driving from the pueblo Felipe Carrillo Puerto in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Felipe Carrillo Puerto is the Mayan cultural capitol of the Yucatan, located 45-minutes south of Tulum and a little more than an hour north of the Belize border. The Yucatan peninsula is such a precious natural resource: with dozens of cenotes, hundreds of underground rivers, Mayan ruins scattered throughout, the purest lakes, and, of course, the magical Caribbean. Kumankaya is less than an hour from the Seven Colors Lake, known as Lake Bacalar, which is world renown for its beauty. By all this, it is obvious why we chose this location, but it is also more than that. We chose to realize our dream here because of the solitude, the energy of the jungle with its plentiful and diverse life, and because all the medicinal plants necessary for our practice will grow here, which means in a couple of years, we will be completely self sufficient.
Kumankaya Healing Center is the merging of a South American style/ lineage with Mexican Mayan cultural. From the very beginning, it was extremely important to us to hire primarily Mayan builders– to honor the lineage of the land in this way. We’ve had the same crew of Mayan masons since the very beginning, and they have erected nearly every single structure at Kumankaya. They have met each structural challenge with ingenuity and grace.
In the future, we plan to open our cenote, add solar panels, and build more housing / facilities to accommodate more people and improve the quality of life at Kumankaya. We want all our facilities to be as eco-conscious as possible, made in the traditional way but also providing minimal modern comforts.
