As students we’re taught that conventional energy sources are drying out rapidly, due to excess use, and renewable energy should be used before the picture gets worse. Sri Aurobindo International Centre for Education in Puducherry has implemented these teachings and has become the first educational institution in India to become self reliant(in terms of energy needs) by using solar energy. With almost all the roof tops being fitted with solar pannels, the school produces 45 KW energy from its solar power plant, producing three times of its requirement.
The school became energy self reliant in 2014 when it installed its first solar power unit which produced 15 KW; an additional 30 KW was added in 2015 to power the ashram which is also in the campus. School authorities say they have been able to save more than Rs 10,000 per month which was earlier spent on utility bill. They also hope to recover the investment on the solar plant, which was around Rs. 1 crore, in just ten years.
With many airports, police stations and now, schools using solar energy, India is set to become one of the top solar energy producers by 2022.
