HahaSmart’s Solar News Episode 17: Amazon and Vegas Bets on Solar!

Amazon has installed Colorado’s largest single rooftop solar panel installation at its 855,000-square-foot robotics fulfillment center in Thornton. The solar-powered system is contains 17,280 solar panels that will span of 19 acres. The solar panel installation will be able to generate over 6 MW of solar power capacity and will start producing electricity in November.

Colorado isn’t the the only state planning to get large solar projects, Nevada is hoping to join them. A new solar facility north of the Las Vegas valley is set to become one of the world’s largest. Project Gemini would take up about 11 square miles of BLM land, making it about three times larger than the closest solar array.

Texas is also adding a 240-acre solar farm in Houston. Houston’s mayor announced that Sunnyside energy is going to repurpose a former landfill in Sunnyside to a mass solar farm. The design is calls for a 70-mw system that is going to supply enough solar electricity to provide solar power for around 12,000 homes.
