Altenergy installs 251-kW solar array for Virginia agricultural transport provider

Houff Corporation, an agricultural products and services company serving the Virginia counties of Rockingham, Augusta, Page and Rockbridge, has reduced its electricity bills by converting to solar energy.

“Our operations require a fair amount of electrical energy. To have a major portion of that energy come from solar energy is a great cost savings for our company” says J.D Patton, treasurer of Houff. “The original project was a resounding success, so when we recently purchased another facility adjacent to our current location, we decided to install solar panels on the roof to apply the similar cost savings on this new facility.”

In 2016, Houff contacted Altenergy to install a 234-kW solar PV system for its warehouse. The new 251-kW solar PV system is expected to offset 100% of Houff’s new facility’s energy demand.

Houff is based in Weyers Cave. The company provides transportation and logistics services for agricultural and industrial customers in the Central Shenandoah Valley, and rail-to-truck transload services and transportation and storage services at several locations throughout Virginia.

“It was a breeze” said Taylor Balac, master electrician at Altenergy. “The folks from Houff were incredibly accommodating during the installation process, providing use of a forklift, as well as a number of powered pallet jacks. This allowed us to quickly setup our safety system and begin installation. With 7 installers on site, we were able to divide and conquer: finishing 90% of the job within 3 weeks. I could not have asked for better performance from our crew of installers and could not have received better treatment from the owners”.

“Altenergy is an excellent company to work with. I particularly appreciate the turnkey approach they take to the project, preparing all the necessary paperwork for the customer. Installation was very quick, and the final project looks great. The individuals we worked with at Altenergy were all very professional and knowledgeable,” said J.D. Patton.
